The Franciscan Evangelical Life calls all Franciscans to blend both work and prayer into an integrated whole. Franciscans are also called to be with those in need. Each Novice is required to spend time in ministry each week during the novitiate year. Ministry opportunities vary according to the talents and skills of the novices and the needs found in the Joliet, Illinois community. Some ministry experiences have included: being a companion to a nursing home resident, working with developmentally disable adults, ministering in the Catholic Worker House, and serving in the Women's Crisis Center.

Novices are also called to sometimes go beyond the ordinary requirements of the program and to accomplish good through service projects. Some examples are: serving Thanksgiving and Easter dinner to persons who are homeless or had nowhere else to go, and assisting with Santa's workshop.
